How much refrigerant should be added for the refrigeration of a refrigerator?

The amount of refrigerant to be added to a refrigerator varies depending on factors such as the specifications, models, and types of refrigerants. Generally speaking, the charging amount for a single-door refrigerator is approximately 50 - 80 grams; that for a double-door refrigerator is about 80 - 120 grams; and that for a triple-door refrigerator may be 120 - 150 grams.

I. Common Refrigerants and Reference Ranges of Refrigerant Charging Amounts

If the refrigerator uses R134a refrigerant, small refrigerators (with a volume of 100 - 150 liters) usually require about 100 - 150 grams; medium-sized refrigerators (with a volume of 180 - 250 liters) may need 150 - 200 grams; and large refrigerators (with a volume greater than 300 liters) generally need 200 - 250 grams.

II. Methods to Determine the Accurate Refrigerant Charging Amount

Check the refrigerator nameplate

The type and charging amount of the refrigerant are usually marked on the nameplate of the refrigerator, which is the most accurate reference information for determining the refrigerant charging amount. For example, the nameplate may read "Refrigerant: R600a, Charging amount: 100g ± 5g", which clearly indicates the required refrigerant for the refrigerator and its precise charging range.

Pressure judgment method (professional tools and experience are required)

A pressure gauge can be used to measure the pressure of the refrigeration system of the refrigerator. During the refrigerant charging process, different refrigerants have different pressure ranges. Taking R600a as an example, under normal working conditions, the low-pressure is generally around 0 - 0.02MPa.

However, this method requires that the maintenance personnel have rich experience because the pressure is also affected by factors such as ambient temperature.

Observation method (auxiliary method)

Experienced maintenance personnel can preliminarily judge whether the refrigerant is sufficient by observing the refrigeration effect of the refrigerator. If the refrigeration speed of the refrigerator is normal, the evaporator frosts evenly, and the return pipe has a slightly cool feeling but does not frost, it generally indicates that the amount of refrigerant is appropriate. If the evaporator frosts unevenly, or the refrigerator runs for a long time but has a poor refrigeration effect, it may be due to insufficient or excessive refrigerant and other problems.

It should be noted that adding refrigerant to a refrigerator is a professional operation. Because if the refrigerant leaks, it may cause harm to the environment and human health. Meanwhile, excessive or insufficient refrigerant will affect the normal operation of the refrigerator. If you are not a professional maintenance personnel, it is advisable to ask a professional home appliance maintenance technician to perform the operation of adding refrigerant to the refrigerator.
